President and Chief Executive Officer, Upper Peninsula Health Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Group
Dennis H. Smith is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Upper Peninsula Health Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Group, representing Upper Peninsula Health Information Network, representing UPHIE (“Up-high”), a consumer-centered health plan and provider service organization, which contracts with managed-care firms, insurance companies, and governmental agencies to provide managed care and other health-related services in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Health Care Network is a corporation of organizations formed to facilitate access to high-quality health care at a reasonable cost.
Mr. Smith is the current president of the Economic Club of Marquette County and a member-at-large and past president of the Michigan Association of Health Plans Executive Committee. He is a board member of the Michigan Health Information Network and the Medicaid Health Plans of America (located in Washington, D.C.). He also serves on the Boards of Directors of the Marquette County Economic Development Corporation and the United Way of Marquette County, for which he also serves on the Finance Committee.
In 2009, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm appointed Smith to serve on the state’s Controlled Substances Advisory Committee. Before joining the Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Smith was the senior director for insurance services at the Michigan Health and Hospital Association in Lansing and a principal in the MHA Investments Corporation. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Eastern Michigan University and attended graduate school at Eastern and Western Michigan Universities.
