To provide more clinical data to the network, MiHIN is expanding access through our Integrated Technology Platform (ITP) and using our Intelligent Query Broker (IQB) service to connect to eHealth Exchange. With this new connection, providers can now retrieve information for their patients from eHealth Exchange, the nation’s largest query-based health information network. This connection will also enable MiHIN’s participants to exchange health information with federal agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Social Security Agency (SSA), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as with other healthcare organizations and statewide health information exchanges (HIEs) that participate in eHealth Exchange. This greatly reduces the time and effort needed to obtain records from other organizations, especially when patients receive care outside of their home networks.

MiHIN’s IQB, a cutting-edge solution for healthcare providers, enables access to critical patient data from local, regional, and national networks and is designed to deliver secure, real-time data at the point of care.  Through IQB, providers gain a consolidated view of patients’ demographics, diagnoses, medications, radiology reports, labs, and discharge summaries. Instead of receiving lengthy documents full of irrelevant data, providers receive only the information they need, presented in a format they can use. This enhancement is available at an additional cost for participating organizations.

This expansion also strengthens MiHIN’s relationship with the VA, allowing facilities in Michigan to use this connection to exchange information with community providers throughout the state in real time. This bi-directional connection allows both the sending and querying of Continuity of Care Documents (CCDs), improving the flow of clinical information and supporting more coordinated care.

There are more than 25 VA medical centers and clinics in Michigan, serving a population of nearly 500,000 veterans. Through this new connection, VA providers can access hospitalization data, lab results, imaging reports, medication history, and other clinical details when veterans receive care in non-VA settings. Similarly, community providers can now retrieve records from the VA when their patients have received care within the VA system.

This effort ensures providers have the information they need to support their patients, no matter where they receive care, while improving care coordination, reducing duplication, and enabling better treatment decisions.
