MiHIN New Service – Care Coordinator IDs

Published: 1/29/2021 -  MiHIN is happy to announce a new service to help make electronic health information solutions more accessible to care coordinators in Michigan. Care coordinators are an essential part of the health care team. Most often RNs, care coordinators work across the care continuum—including hospitals, primary care, specialties, and post-acute —to provide help and continuity to patients who are high-risk or have complex needs beyond a single episode of care. Despite their critical importance, care coordinators have not historically been able to leverage Health Information Technology (HIT) solutions because many HIT solutions are designed with clinical providers in mind and either don’t fit the needs of care coordinators or aren’t accessible to them. Care coordinators whose organizations participate with MiHIN are now able to request a...

MiHIN Imaging Workshop Recap

Published: 1/29/2021 -  Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) has begun convening key stakeholders throughout the state of Michigan to help frame a statewide data sharing opportunity for exchanging medical images. This virtual collaborative workshop series is designed to identify key barriers in exchanging medical images today and prioritize data sharing scenarios based on the additional value for the community. The workshops will focus on building a multi-vendor initiative to broaden the conversation and barriers that are present when sharing medical images between systems. The workshops will result in a White Paper that frames the data sharing opportunity and the associated issues that will be used as the foundation for developing the required functionality to enhance the existing use case. Our first session, The Current State & Vendor...

USQHIN – An Alternative Nationwide Health Information Network

Published: 1/11/2021 -  USQHIN – An Alternative Nationwide Health Information Network The United States Health Information Network (USQHIN), a wholly owned subsidiary of Velatura Public Benefit Corporation, has been launched in response to pending federal regulatory guidelines as outlined in the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). USQHIN seeks to offer an alternative nationwide health information network, focused on rationalizing interstate data exchange at national scale.   The 21st Century Cures Act mandates that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) establish a TEFCA to enable health information exchange across disparate networks. Some of the stated goals set by the ONC include providing a single “on-ramp” for nationwide connectivity; ensuring the integrity and security of data as it is delivered where and when needed and be scalable across the country. The draft document...

Proposed Changes to HIPAA and the CMS Interoperability Rule

Published: 1/8/2021 -  While the pandemic has remained the top priority in the U.S. healthcare landscape, it has highlighted the importance of interoperability and the key challenges that exist to coordinated care. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and sub-agency, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)  recognized these gaps and expedited efforts to resolve them by rolling out two key initiatives. In December, HHS proposed changes to the HIPAA Privacy Rule and CMS expanded the CMS Interoperability Rule to include Prior Authorization. In an unprecedented act, HHS has proposed significant changes to the HIPAA Privacy Rule. The basis for many of these changes are to increase sharing for covered entities so they will better be able to coordinate care amongst themselves and with...

Announcing the PHI Consent Tool Video Series

Published: 1/8/2021 - In 2019, The Michigan Health Endowment commissioned Altarum to develop the PHI Consent Tool to help providers navigate the complexity of consent and confidentiality regulations around the release and exchange of protected health information (PHI). The new PHI Consent Tool Video Series is designed to complement the PHI Consent Tool and to help Michigan stakeholders better understand how to navigate the Tool. It also covers complex scenarios such as PHI sharing in the cases of domestic violence, substance use information, and minor’s PHI. The new video series and the updated PHI Consent Tool, which now includes references to the most recent legislative changes, including the CARES Act, are available on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' website: www.michigan.gov/PHIConsentTool To stay up to date with the latest...

The MiHIN Operations Advisory Committee

Published: 1/8/2021 - The MiHIN Operations Advisory Committee (MOAC) was formed in 2013 to create a governance structure that allows stakeholders from across the state that have signed our Qualified Data Sharing Agreement to provide feedback, guide MiHIN operations and advance statewide solutions. We regularly convene a group of approximately 40 stakeholders for a quarterly meeting along with ad hoc Taskforces and Meet-Ups as needed. These MOAC members bring together diverse perspectives to create a shared vision for improving statewide health information exchange and develop valuable tools for relieving burdens in healthcare. Statewide conformance is MOAC’s first taskforce and continues to be active with a total of 18 organizations representing health plans, hospitals/health systems, physician organizations, and associations. This work represents the multi-stakeholder outreach loop MiHIN’s mission is...

Reflecting On 2020

Published: 11/30/2020 -  The end of a historical year will soon be upon us. Even as we continue to navigate the challenges that this year has brought, there is much for which to be thankful. It is my pleasure to connect with you on behalf of all of us at MiHIN, Velatura, The Interoperability Institute, and USQHIN to offer our warmest wishes for a safe, happy, and enjoyable time of celebration.    2020 has been a period of significant challenge and personal hardship for the many organizations and people we serve. The MiHIN Group has only been able to successfully respond to the rapid change and growing demands because of the committed and collaborative relationships we are fortunate to share with our stakeholders in Michigan and across the...
